Intervertebral discs the soft pads between the bodies of the vertebrae which make up the spinal column. The discs contribute to flexibility of the spine and act as shock absorbers. Prolapsed intervertebral disc syn slipped disc protrusion of the nucleus pulposus through its fibrous covering into the spinal canal, due to degenerative changes, heavy lifting or injury in sport. Can press on the spinal cord or on the nerve roots, leading to pain, numbness, paraesthesia or even paralysis. Most common in the lumbar region, causing sciatica if the roots of the sciatic nerve are compressed.

Ayurveda categorizes Slip disc as one of diseases caused by vitiated Vata (one of the principle dosha in the body, responsible for the movement and functionality of the body). Arthritis

Arthritis is one of the most common ailment for which ayurvedic help is being sought these days. According to Ayurveda mostly pains are caused by the aggravation of vata (air) dosha. Most common forms of Arthritis seen are

  1. Osteoarthritis: commonly correlated in Ayurveda to Sandhigata vata. Sandhigata vata(Osteoarthritis) is a degenerative condition caused by accumulation of vata(air) in joints. Ayurvedic therapies to reduce the inflammation, nourish and lubricate the joints are routinely employed.
  2. Gout: is diagnosed as Rakta vata in Ayurveda .It is caused by accumulation of impurities(vata and pitta) of blood into joints in the form of uric acid crystals causing damage to joints. Rakta vata mostly starts afflicting the smaller joints like thumbs and toes first gradually moving to bigger joints. Ayurvedic therapies are basically employed to detoxify the blood, reduce the inflammation and joints and nourish the joints.
  3. Rheumatoid Arthritis: resembles Aamavata in Ayurveda. Aamavata (Rheumatoid arthritis) in Ayurveda is believed to be caused by prolonged accumulation of undigested food (aam) in the blood resulting in blockages in the channels of vata near the joints hence vata is accumulated in joints. Treatment is aimed at helping digest the Aam and pacifying the vata. Initially blockages in the path of vata is relieved followed by the lubricating and strengthening the joint.

Paralysis

The word ‘plegia’ or ‘Paralysis’ means severe weakness of muscles; ‘Hemi’ implies one side of the body; ’para’ means half body or lower body; and ‘quadri’ means all four limbs. Hence, Paralysis can be either one half of the body(Hemiplegia), or of lower limbs(Paraplegia) or else in all four limbs(Quadriplegia). Any disease or injury in the motor centers of the brain can cause Paralysis.

Ayurveda terms paralysis as pakshavada, a disorder caused by the vitiation of vata dosha. Ayurvedic treatments for paralysis will aim to rectify the vitiated vata dosha. In the Ayurveda system of medicine vata is responsible for the proper coordination of all voluntary movements in the human body. A constraint in the proper movement of vata can cause paralysis. Exercises will be prescribed in addition to purification and nourishing therapies like vasti, abhyangam, kizhi, sirodhara, thalam, njavara kizhi etc. to bring the patient back to normalcy after the removal of toxins

A sprain is a partial or complete tear of a ligament, a strong band of tissue that connects bones to one another and stabilizes joints. A strain is a partial or complete tear of muscle or tendon. Inflammation of a tendon (tendinitis) and inflammation of one of the fluid-filled sacs that allow tendons to move easily over bones (bursitis) usually result from minor stresses that repeatedly aggravate the same part of the body. These conditions often occur at the same time.

Shoulder pain, Neck pain, Neck stiffness, Low Back Ache, Sciatica, Slip Disc, Tennis Elbow, Carpel Tunnel syndrome, Hip and Knee pain, Plantar fascities, muscle cramps and ligament injuries are some of the common sports injuries.

Sinusitis

Sinusitis is an inflammation of the mucous membrane lining the nasal passages and sinuses, usually caused by an infection. The sinuses are hollow air-filled cavity in the skull. They help to maintain pressure, air circulation and serve as a shock absorber for the internal organs of the skull. Sinuses are lined with membrane which secretes mucus that traps any germs or bacteria and drains out, in exchange air is filled. But when the sinuses opening into the nose are blocked, excess mucus is produced which leads to inflammation.

Exposure to environment pollution, dust, chemical irritant, Recent upper respiratory tract infection like common cold, Exposure to allergens like pollens, Sudden changes in environment temperature, Low physical exertion, Any structural change in the nasal passage due to nasal polyp, deviated nasal septum, etc., Tobacco smoking, Weak immune system

Nasyam introduces drops of medicated oil into the nasal passages where it penetrates the mucosal lining and promotes healing of the nose and sinus region. Accompanied by a gentle sinus massage, Nasyam also prevents recurrence of sinusitis. Shirodhara, Oil pulling and Steam inhalation are the other therapies used to treat sinusitis.
